NOISE MAPS FOR THE CHARACTERIZATION OF THE ACOUSTIC LANDSCAPE THROUGH CARTOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF SOUND LEVELS. NOISE MAPPING IS A POWERFUL DIAGNOSTIC TOOL THAT ALLOWS TO SET OUT CONFLICT ZONES AND TO IDENTIFY NOISE SOURCES, ASSISTING IN THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS
– Are you planning a new traffic route and want to know its influence on the surrounding environment?
– Do you wish to reduce noise throughout the borough and require technical assistance?
– Are you planning a new external rest and recreational area and wish to know the best noise reduction measures to implement?

Did you know that noise levels that health experts consider unacceptable, that is, levels that can cause discomfort, sleep disturbance and have a prejudicial effect to health affect 20% of the European Union population?
A noise map qualitatively and quantitatively defines the noise exposure of an area. It allows to quickly identify and pinpoint areas where exposure limits are exceeded (over-exposure), the delimitation of quiet surroundings or noisy corridors and the attainment of desciptive data of the acoustic environment. It allows the definition of exposure classes, to identify and limit priority intervention areas and to determine possible alternatives to noisy traffic routes or the location of industrial noise sources or transport.
The ability to understand early on (draft project) the impact of implementing new highways or to estimate the effectiveness of proposed noise reduction measures is the biggest advantage of having an updated noise map. It allows to quickly compare different alternatives or implementation strategies, assess the potential increase in noise exposure, the effectiveness of the measures considering the associated costs and also to contemplate and to triage the possible existence of sensitive receivers affected by the changes. It is also the ideal tool for seeking public comment due to the visual character of the information.
